England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies north west of England, and the Celtic Sea lies to the south west. The North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south separate it from continental Europe. The country also includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight.

England became a unified state in 927 AD, and since the Age of Discovery that began in the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world.
In the 18th century, with the Industrial Revolution, England transformed into the world’s first industrialized nation. 
The capital of England is London. England’s population is about 53 million.  
England has a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system. The country is governed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. England's current Queen is Elizabeth II.

England was occupied by several tribes, such as the Celts, Jutes, Saxones, Angles and Vikings. Even the Romans were present.


The first English king was Athelstan (927 - 939). He was the grandson of Alfred the Great.
